What is Yoga?

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” meaning to yield, join or unite.  Practitioners believe that this implies joining and integrating all aspects of the individual to achieve a supreme level.  The uniting of mind and body and soul to achieve a happy balance and useful life is the underlying goal of the practice of yoga. 10 uses for lemon essential oil

lemon essential oil

Essential oils have a wide variety of uses.  Lemon is very versatile and has numerous internal and external applications. Not only does it have a pleasant, invigorating scent, lemon is antimicrobial and antibacterial.

10 Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

This list just scratches the surface of the many uses of this amazing oil.

1. Diffuse into the air

Place 3-5 drops of lemon EO into your favorite diffuser to help cleanse the air and lift your mood.

2.  Make a handwash

Place 1/4 c. unscented liquid castile (I use Dr. Bronner’s), 1/2 tablespoon vegetable glycerine, 1/2 tablespoon grapeseed oil, and 20 drops lemon essential oil into a foaming soap dispenser.   Fill the remainder with distilled water.  Lightly shake and scrub away!!

3.  Freshen laundry

After you clothes have finished the drying cycle, place 5 drops lemon essential oil on a small clean rag.  Toss in the dry and run a warm cycle for about 5 minutes to freshen up the load.

4.  Polish you silver

When you notice your genuine silver table wear starting to tarnish, place a drop of lemon essential oil directly on the spot and polish with a soft, lint-free cloth.  You silver will be sparkling in no time!

5.  Remove those fun temporary tattoos and sticky goo

If you are like us and have kids that enjoy those hard-to-resist tattoos, you know how it can be when you want them removed.  Also, if you have any sticker residue left over this is great to remove all the gunk.  Place a drop or 2 directly on the affected area and massage until you can remove what is left.  With younger, sensitive skin, you make want to dilute with a carrier oil as the lemon can be irritating to some.

6.  Keep you leather looking new

Place a couple drops of lemon essential oil on a soft rag and massage into leather coats and shoes to help them maintain their suppleness.  Great for using on cracked area or saddles.

7.  Combat the cold

Place a couple drops of lemon essential in a teaspoon of honey to help soothe a sore throat.

8.  Clean counter tops and floors

Fill an empty spray bottle with distilled water and add 5 drops of lemon essential oil.  Use to clean coutertops, floors, and stainless steel appliances.  It is great for removing those stubborn fingerprints on stainless steel

9.  Deter bugs in your garden

You can use that same bottle of cleaner from #8 to spray on your precious plants to keep the aphids away!

10.  Freshen up your glass of water

When you are dining at a restaurant, add a couple drops to your water to flavor it up a bit.  Just say no to their lemons. Who knows where they’ve been….yuck!

It is important to do your research and purchase only Certified Pure Theraputic Grade oils from a company you trust. Many of the cheap oils are cut in with fillers to keep prices down. I mostly use doTerra oils but have purchased some blends from other companies I trust. You can order doTerra oils HERE. They are Certified Pure Theraputic Grade oils and the company has the highest of standards when it comes to sourcing the plants for their oils.

If you are new to oils and don’t know where to start, I recommend the Intro Kit from doTerra. It comes with the 3 most widely used oils lemon, lavender, and peppermint. It is a great start for beginners. Because I love this kit, I’m going to be giving one away! Please enter my give away below and sign up for my monthly Essential Oils newsletter HERE.

Is Diet Soda Healthy?

Soda Bottles

With the increasing waistline of most Americans or those who share the Standard American Diet ( or SAD), diet soda has become a staple. If it is hot and you are thirsty you reach for a soda. If you are in the car and driving long distances you reach for a soda. If you’re playing ball, bowling or just watching a movie, you reach for a soda.

Companies have spent massive amounts of money convincing the public that diet soda is the healthier, and lighter, choice. If we want to enjoy the taste of soda but lose weight then diet soda is the way to go.

But just the opposite may be true. In a recent study researchers from the Texas Health And Sciences Center School of Medicine finalized their conclusions from an eight year data collection and presented them a the American Diabetes Association meeting.

They found that even though drinking soda was associated with a high risk of obesity that drinking diet soda was linked with an even higher risk. This means that when the researchers took a good look at their data that found that nearly all the obesity risk came from diet sodas. (1)

The researchers are quick to point out that this kind of study doesn’t prove that diet sodas cause obesity but rather, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

In another study from Purdue University, Indiana, researchers found that rats who consistently ate artificial sweeteners more consistently ate more food. This supports the theory that artificial sweeteners alter the bodies perception of satisfaction when artificial sweeteners are used. (2)

This means that although you may feel that you have received a sweet your brain doesn’t register the fact and your body continues to crave other sweets and foods.

Even though diet soda doesn’t have the sugar or the calories it is full of other chemicals that drain your health such as caffeine, sodium, phosphoric acid and artificial sweeteners. But Americans continue their love affair with soda. According to Beverage Digest, overall sales of all sodas in 2005 worked out to be approximately 2 Ω servings per day for every man, woman and child.

There are also multiple other chemicals that come along for the ride. Some of these chemicals include caffeine and phosphoric acid which leaches calcium from the body and can tilt your pH balance dangerously to the acidic side.

Although diet soda is a good very short-term method to decrease the sugar intake of drinking lots of regular soda each day it is also something that should be weaned out of the diet after the initial sugar addiction has been conquered. So the basic question of is diet soda healthy? I can honestly be answered with a resounding no!

Just Say “No”…To Carbs for Breakfast

I recently finished reading the book Deep Nutrition by Dr. Cate Shanahan. Dr. Cate is a board certified Family Physician. She trained in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell University before attending Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She practiced in Hawaii for ten years where she studied ethnobotany and her healthiest patient’s culinary habits. She is currently in private practice in Napa CA, and consults for the LA Lakers. This is a great book for everyone to read but I highly recommend it for pregnant women and those trying to conceive. She also has another book called Food Rules: A Doctor’s Guide to Healthy Eating. I have not yet read this book, but after I finish the 200 other books I have in my library, I’ll get to it… Deep Nutrition was an eye opener for me. We all know we SHOULD be eating nutritious foods for our health, but did you know what you eat can have a profound effect on your children, and even your grandchildren??

Foods to Avoid

Two of the main foods Dr. Cate recommends to avoid are sugar and vegetable oil. These are mostly found in processed foods. Because of our busy lifestyles, we rely on fast, cheap, and easy ways to eat. It’s a difficult transition to make but you are not only doing it for the short term, but for the long term. One statement about vegetable oil that really resonated with me in her book was this “In 2007, an article in Genes to Cells showed how oxidative stress can disrupt hormone production and interfere with hormonal responses, suggesting that women who consume vegetable oil while pregnant are increasing their child’s risk of all kinds of growth deformities and disease. So if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant, banish vegetable oil and foods containing vegetable oil from your kitchen, and get the stuff out of your life.” Not only is vegetable oil bad, but canola as well. The process that these seeds go through to make the oil transforms them into something our bodies cannot recognize, creating an inflammatory response. If you use it daily or consume process foods that contain it, you are exposing yourself to chronic inflammation and setting yourself up for disease.

Stick to Protein and Fat for Breakfast

I just listened to Dr. Cate’s podcast with David Asprey today on The Bulletproof Executive and I just had to share one more quote.

“Breakfast is the one meal of the day to not screw up. Don’t have carbs for breakfast unless you have just worked out.”

I love this because it is so true and I see it all the time. Muffins, toast, rolls, high carbohydrate cereals, fruit, oatmeal, these area all things that are going to spike our blood sugar. They are also going to make our energy crash prematurely, cause brain fog and also weight gain. I always hear people say how healthy their grandparents were because they grew up on bacon, eggs and lard. Well, they were doing it right and we are doing it all wrong…

Setting your Children up for Success

When we send our kids off to school with a tummy full of cereal and toast, or a poptart or toaster strudel, it won’t be long before their stomachs are growling and they can’t focus because they are not properly nourished. We need to be more aware of what we are putting into their little bodies and make sure we are giving them proper nourishment to help their brains function and keep their energy up. I love the Bulletproof-Diet-Infographic because it basically lays it all out and makes it simple. Food doesn’t need to be complicated, that’s not the way we were designed. We need simple so we can digest and utilize what we consume.

If you’d like to hear the entire podcast you can watch it below. It has been one of my favorites so far!
